LaserClad®: A Long-Lasting Solution for Improved Drag Chain Conveyor Performance

The Challenge
A mining customer was looking for a long-lasting solution to increase the performance of their drag chain conveyor. The guide panels, located on both sides of the conveyor, were subject to heat, abrasion and friction, and presented a maintenance challenge due to the minimal clearance between the conveyor chain/paddles and the guide panels.

The Solution
The LaserClad process was selected to apply 1/32”-1/16” of cladding material on both faces of the guide panels, providing enough room for the chain and paddle. Castolin Eutectic’s proprietary XHD powder was chosen for surface protection based on its high deposition characteristics, and CCO liners (CDP® OptiMax) were used on other sections to increase the performance of the conveyor.

The Outcome
The parts have been in service for over a year and, to this date, show minimal signs of wear. Our wear management team has been asked to come onsite to help the customer with other wear problems.
