The Football World Cup in Brasil and Coatings have a lot in common

What have three football stadiums and the largest ship ever manufactured in the UK in common? The surface of approximately 19,500m². The flight deck of HMS Queen Elizabeth, for which Monitor Coatings Ltd. have developed an extremly wear-resistant coating, covers the size of three football pitches. On 4th July 2014, the Queen herself officially baptised the Navy's largest ship ever built at Rosyth dockyard.

After a two-year test program, Monitor Coatings have been awarded the prestigious contract for providing a non-skid, thermal gas wash resistant deck coating for HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales Carrier Decks. The story began in May 2012, when the UK government, in association with the Aircraft Carrier Alliance, engaged the company to investigate and deliver a suitable deck coating that would withstand the aerothermal environment and gas wash exhaust of the F35 engine on JSF and Eurofighter when conducting a hover transition and vertical landing.

The scope of activities to be delivered included: the development of techniques required for large scale preparation and application of a Thermal Metal Spray coating (TMS), the development of process-technology readiness and manufacturing capability levels acceptable for large-scale application and long-term support of the HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales carrier deck, both vessels of the Royal Navy.

Monitor Coatings hit the jackpot : 19,500m² coating on UK Navy’s biggest Ship in History

The scope of work culminated in a two day demonstration of the process application, quality system and in-service repair program to both the Aircraft Carrier Alliance and the stakeholders. The demonstration day was very well received by senior naval officers and civilians from the marine engineering community.
